Notes

James Blevins was the oldest son of John J. BLEVINS & Pinkey CHEEK of Alleghany County, NC.  He died in the Civil War.  His wife Mary WOLFE's birthdate and marriage dates are from the Wolfe family Bible.  (It appears that she and James got married after the birth of their son, Preston.)  After James' death, Mary married Frederick BOLT of Grayson County, VA, who was also a Civil War veteran (he was awarded a Confederate pension in 1900).  Mary's date of death comes from a letter written by Frederick Bolt to Mary's sister Susie (Wolfe) Reeves in Hiwassee, AR.  The letter says, "Well Susie I have sad news to rite.  Pop is dead.  She died Dec. 20 with consumption.  She was down sick for 2 weeks.  We are all left sad."  Mary is buried in the Bolt Family Cemetery in Troutdale, Grayson Co., VA.  (This info kindly provided by Carolyn Spence.)  Note her gravestone indicates that she died on Oct. 21 not Dec. 20.

Civil War: James BLEVINS enlisted on May 3, 1862, in Alleghany Co., NC, as a Private in Co. I, 61st NC Inf. Reg't, at the age of 22. Promoted to full Sergeant on May 15, 1864.  He was killed in action at the Battle of Fort Harrison on Sept. 30, 1864.
