He married Margaret "Peggy" Fender, daughter of John FENDER & Martha TOLIVER, Sept. 19, 1854, in Ashe Co., NC. She was born Apr. 15, 1837, in Ashe Co., NC, and died Jan. 31, 1898, in Grayson Co., VA.

Civil War: Joshua S. CHOATE served in the Grayson Militia, Co. C, 63rd VA Infantry. Enlisted Apr. 6, 1862, at Moccasin Gap. Present through Aug. 1864. Name also spelled Shoat. On 1898 Grayson Co. CSA Vets. Roster. Applied for a pension in 1900, but was rejected, he was worth more than $1000 according to the Grayson Co. Pension Board.
