Dec. 2, 1778. Wilkes Co., NC. John COX entered 500 acres on Crab Fork of Little River. John COX marked out, Wm. HARDEN written in. (Wilkes Land Entry No. 518.)

April 5, 1780. Montgomery Co., VA. The court certifies a list of soldiers who served on the frontiers of Augusta Co., VA, in 1755 and 1756, including John COX, David COX, and Joshua COX. (Kegley's Virginia Frontier, "Service Records from Montgomery County", p.276.)

Aug. 20, 1793. Grayson Co., VA, Land Plat Book. "John COX, Asee [assignee] of Robert POLLARD by virtue of a Land Treasury Warrant for 1200 acres No. 529 and dated the 25th day of June 1793 enters 732 acres of land on the south side of New River. . . below the mouth of Crab Creek at a Spanish Oak... up said creek to sd. river . . . including his improvement for quantity."

Mar. 22, 1794. Grayson Co., VA, Land Plat Book. "John COX, a'see [assignee] of P. GAINS asee of James NEWELL asee of William HARRISON asee of Julius RUCKER by virtue of a certificate from the principal surveyor of Lee County of a part of a land office treasury warrant for 13300 acres No. 19689 & dated the 2nd day of Oct. 1783 as for Susannah COLLINS enters 300 acres of land on the waters of H. Creek the waters of the North Fork of New River beginning on the N. Carolina line & running so as to include his improvement for quantity."

Note: John Cox obtained this 3,000 acre grant as bounty land for building an iron works. Some years later, the Elk Creek Forge was built in the same area. John Cox's iron works and his 3,000 acre grant are discussed in a legal case involving the Elk Creek Forge. (Attorney General v. Caleb Osborn, 59 N.C. 298 (1862).)

1815 Federal Tax Assessment, Ashe Co., NC: "John COX Sr.: in care and management of Jame COX, one farm on New River at the mouth of Peach Bottom Creek, 400 acres having theron one dwelling house of logs, 16 feet square; two barns and cabben roofs, three cabbens, one tub grist mill valued at $800, a tract on Crab Creek joining the lands of Samuel COX, 500 acres, no improvements valued at $100; a tract on Crab Creek joining Samuel COX's land, 75 acres, no improvements, valued at $40, total $940."
