Notes

David Evans was born June 8, 1819, probably in Ashe (Alleghany) County, NC, but his parents have never been identified. According to Alleghany County Heritage (1983), article no. 309 by Mrs. Willard E. Rector, "David Evans was born June 8, 1819. His death date is unknown, but it is known that he is buried in the Evans family cemetery which is on the old Smith Evans farm on Road 1405 off Highway 21 past Twin Oaks. His tombstone broke and has disappeared. David was married twice, first to Margaret Whitaker, on December 27, 1846. Margaret is known to be buried in the Evans family cemetery near David and his second wife, though there is no engraved stone." (See also Alleghany Cemeteries Through 1986 pub. by the Alleghany Co. Hist.-Gen. Society.) Mrs. Rector cites "David Evans family Bible" as one of her sources.

David Evans' land was located on the Meadow Branch of the Little River in the geographic center of Alleghany County. In 1859, David Evans, James H. Parks and David Landreth donated 50 acres of land to establish a county seat, which was named Sparta. The original deed was destroyed by fire, so the three men reconveyed the land in 1866.
