Aaron Canady, Sr.
of Wilkes & Surry Co., NC

Aaron Canady (Kennedy), Sr., possibly the son of William CANADY, Sr., of Wilkes & Surry Co., NC, was born bet. 1760-1770 and died bef. May 1845 in Surry Co., NC. He married (1) unknown; (2) Temperance, last name unknown (some sources say MARSHALL).

Children of Aaron Canady, Sr.:

  1. Jane Canady, m. __ ROBERTS. Aaron Canady's will leaves a Negro woman to daughter Jane ROBERTS. Possibly the Jane ROBERTS, age 80, listed in the 1850 Census of Surry Co., NC, N. Div., Hotel Dist., p.330. If so, she was probably one of the older daughters, b. abt. 1780.
  2. Possibly Alie Canady, b. bet. 1785-1794, m. Abraham HAINES. In Aaron Canady's 1844 will, he leaves $100 to a grandson Harrison HAINES. The only possibility from marriage records is Alie CANADAY who m. Abraham HAINES on Nov. 3, 1800, Wilkes Co., NC, with bondsman William CANADAY. Abraham Haines appears on the 1810 Census of Surry Co., NC, p.699 (1 w/m and 1 w/f aged 16-25), then no further records. According to published family trees, Abraham Haines & his family moved to Greene Co., GA, in the 1820's, but did not have son named Harrison. There is a Harrison HAINES (or HAYNES) b. abt. 1824 in Wilkes Co. who m. Rebecca CARTER, Dec. 27, 1845. Further research is needed to determine if he was the son of Abraham Haines & Alie Canady.
  3. Aaron H. Kanaday, b. bet. 1790-1800, Wilkes Co., NC; d. Aug. 20, 1882, White Co., GA; m. Mary "Polly" CAUDILL, Nov. 7, 1821, Wilkes Co., NC (b. Aug. 2, 1800; d. Mar. 25, 1888). Children: Shadrack H. Kanaday (1824), Louisa Kanaday (1828), Eliza Kanaday (1829), Myra B. Kanaday (1831), William C. Kanaday (1834), Aaron Gold Kanaday (1838).
  4. Larkin Kennedy, b. abt. 1798, Wilkes Co., NC; d. aft. 1850, Forsyth Co., NC; m. Elizabeth RIGGS, Mar. 24, 1817, Surry Co., NC (b. abt. 1799; d. aft. 1850). Children: Cynthia Kennedy (c.1823), Sarah Kennedy (c.1827), Joel Kennedy (c.1829), Samuel Kennedy (c.1838), Elizabeth J. Kennedy (c.1843).
  5. +Wililam B. Kennedy, b. May 13, 1798, Wilkes Co., NC; d. 1874, Wilkes Co., NC; m. Rachel THOMPSON, daughter of James THOMPSON & Rachel JOHNSON, May 15, 1819, Surry Co., NC (b. abt. 1799; d. 1860-1870).
  6. John Kennedy, b. abt. 1800, Wilkes Co., NC; d. 1883; m. (1) Sarah THOMPSON, daughter of James THOMPSON & Rachel JOHNSON, abt. 1824 (probably b. 1800-1805; d. bet. 1830-1832); m. (2) Elizabeth, last name unk., bef. 1833 (b. abt. 1812; d. aft. 1880).  Children: Churchwell (Churchill) H. Kennedy (c.1825), Tennessee Kennedy (1826), Pleasant B. Kennedy (c.1829), Aaron Williamson Kennedy (1830), Thurza Emma "Thursy" Kennedy (1833), Columbus Kennedy (c.1841).
  7. Elizabeth Canady, b. abt. 1787; m. (1) Job WINFREY, Jan. 30, 1807, Surry Co., NC; bondsman Jesse CANADY; (2) William BOZEWELL, Dec. 24, 1816, Wilkes Co., NC.  Aaron CANADAY deeded property to Job WINFREY in 1807, perhaps as a wedding gift. (Surry Co., NC, DB L, p.263)  In 1815, Aaron Canady was the executor of Job WINFREY's estate (Wilkes WB 3, p.99).  In Aaron's 1844 will, he left $1 to Elizabeth "BASSWILL."
  8. Sally Canady, m. __ SEATON(?). Aaron Canady's will leaves $1 to a grandson Daniel SEATON (or perhaps SEXTON, LEATON, or LAXTON) "son of my Daughter SALLY".
  9. Phebe Canady, m. __ DOUGLAS. Aaron Canady's will leaves a Negro woman to daughter Febee DOUGLASS. There is a Phebe Kennedy who m. William DOUGLAS, Nov. 18, 1824, Surry Co., NC. If this is her, she was probably the youngest daughter maybe b. bet. 1800-1805.
  10. Unknown daughter, m. __ POOR. Aaron Canady's will leaves $100 to granddaughter Sephinia (Sophronia?) POOR.

Notes

Aaron CANADY, Sr., is one of several men named Canady, Kanaday, or Kennedy who appear in the early records of Surry and Wilkes Counties, NC.  It's believed (largely due to their geographic proximity) that Aaron was the son of William CANADY, Sr., who lived on Big Elkin Creek and Mitchells River, near the Wilkes and Surry County line.

According to Wilkes County Heritage, Vol. 1, p.306 (article by Bill and Betty Kanaday), "Aaron Kennaday Sr. born about 1760 is listed on the 1790 census in Wilkes County.  He purchased 100 acres on Mitchells River in Surry County, February 26, 1805.  He lived until 1845.  Aaron Sr. had four sons, William, John, Aaron, Jr., and Larkin and at least four daughters.  It is believed Aaron, Sr., was a son of the William Canady listed on the first census."
