What's New

January 16, 2016. Updated the page on Richard "of Beaufort" Cheek.

December 16, 2010. No updates in quite some time.  I just don't seem to have the time I used to....

June 26, 2009. Thomas Johnson (1729-1786) of Wilkes Co., NC.

June 15, 2009.  Joseph Thompson, Sr. (1744-1823) of Surry Co., NC.

June 3, 2009.  John Jennings, Sr. (c.1706-1811) of Wilkes Co., NC.  Also added a page on Wendel Kraus (Crouse) and a summary page for the Crouse family of Alleghany Co., NC.

May 21, 2009.  Added gravestone photos of Ellis Cheek (1760) of Laurens Dist., SC, and his wife Elizabeth (Smith).

May 20, 2009.  Added a page on Henry Edwards (c.1759-1850), son of John Edwards, Sr., of Orange Co., NC.

May 16, 2009.  Tables on the DNA Project page have been reorganized and updated.

Feb. 20, 2009.  New item on James Cheek of Laurens Dist., SC. It's been previously noted that a plat obtained by William ESLAR on Mar. 13, 1773, in Old Craven Co., SC, describes land on the Saluda River adj. William CHEEK and James CHEEK.  This record always confused me because it seemed to indicate that the Cheek family had moved many miles downriver from where they were living in the Bush River Quaker community (present-day Newberry Co., SC), when everything else indicates they went the opposite direction, to the area that became Laurens Co., SC.  However, doing some further research I learned that the western part of Laurens was, in fact, in Old Craven County.  Therefore, this could be the first record of the Cheek family in Laurens Co., SC.

Feb. 1, 2009.  Added a transcription of the 1857 will of David Cox of Ashe/Alleghany Co., NC.

Jan. 31, 2009.  New page on James Thompson of Surry Co., NC, including a transcription of his will.

Jan. 24, 2009.  Added a graphical family tree for Richard Cheek of Beaufort Co., NC.  Also added a page on John Cheek (c.1760/70) of Moore Co., NC.

Jan. 2, 2009.  While surfing the internet I came across a family tree of Thomas Estes which cites a court record that proves that Martha (Estes), the wife of James Cheek (1762) of Orange Co., NC, was still alive in 1829.  This proves that Martha Estes was James Cheek's first and only wife; he cannot be the James Cheek who married Margaret Bailey in Orange Co. in 1792.

Jan. 1, 2009.  Some pages now link to a Google map which allows you to view either a satellite photo, road map or topographical map.  Here's an example.

Dec. 27, 2008.  The DNA project results can now be viewed on one large spreadsheet thanks to the magic of Google!

Dec. 26, 2008.  Added some information about Mary Stokes, wife of John Edwards of Orange Co., NC.  Also, I discovered that my transcription of the will of William B. Kennedy was missing his son Thompson Kennedy.  That error has now been corrected.
