Notes
lfred Andrews (Anders) was born July 13, 1830, in North Carolina (according to the 1860 census) or Virginia (according to the 1870 and 1880 census). Some sources claim that Alfred Andrews was the son of Starling Andrews. Other sources state he was a son of Starling's nephew James Carr Andrews. The researcher Clifford Rector would not hazard a guess -- he says there is no record of Alfred Andrews' father. (The Anders and Andrews Families of Orange, Ashe, and Alleghany Counties in N.C. and Grayson County VA.) In general there is a lot of confusion about the relationships between the various members of the large Andrews (Anders) family in Grayson County, VA.
Based on census records, Alfred does not fit well with the family of James Carr Andrews. It is harder to analyze Starling's family because they are not listed in the census in 1820 or 1840, and Starling appears to have died before 1850. There is an Alfred Anders (age 19) in the 1850 census of Ashe County, NC, p.250 (HH#182), living with Patsy Anders (age 59), Peggy Anders (age 19), Jackson Anders (age 14), Sarah CROWS [CROUSE] (age 19). This household is a bit of a mystery. Jackson Anders (age 14) is supposed to be a son of Starling Andrews. It is possible that Patsy was the widow of Starling Andrews, and Alfred (age 19) was another one of their sons. Patsy Anders' household (HH#182) is listed very close to the household of William and Abi (Cheek) Anders (HH#186) in the 1850 census. William Anders was a brother of Starling Anders.
Just to add to the confusion, there were actually two different men in Grayson County, VA, named Alfred Andrews who were married to women named Phoebe. The other Alfred Andrews was a bit older (born in 1817) and died between 1900-1910. He had 8 children: Hannah Letitica (born c.1842, m. John Kirby JACKSON), Lydia J. (c.1844), Amanda J. (c.1846), William R. (c.1848, m. Sarah A. EDWARDS), George T. (c.1851, m. Mary Scott PARKS), Alpha S. (c.1854 m. Isaac BREWER), John (c.1856) and Joseph (c.1859).
