Notes
The Little River
homas Andrews (Anders) was born in March 1857 to Sandy and Sarah Anders, according to the birth records of Grayson County, VA. (Source: New River Notes). His gravestone at the Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church in Alleghany Co., NC, gives his date of birth as Sept. 15, 1857. I am not sure which is the correct date. However, the 1900 census also indicates that he was born in September.
Thomas Andrews married Lucinda Cheek on Sept. 8, 1879, when he was 22 and she was 38. Lucinda and her sister, Gilley, both married later in life (Gilley was 37 when she married Isom B. Cox). Another sister, Elizabeth, never married. Many women were unable to find suitable marriage partners after the Civil War because so many young men had been killed.
Nov. 22, 1866. Alleghany Co., NC. Lucinda CHEEK purchased a 72-acre tract of land from her mother Phebe CHEEK and her brothers and sisters. The tract was located on the Little River adj. Richard CHEEK and William CHEEK. (Alleghany Co., NC, DB 1, pp.246-247.) This was one of several transactions which Chesley Cheek's children entered into as a way of dividing up their father's land.
