Notes
ewis Cheek, Sr., left Laurens District, South Carolina, sometime after 1800 with his younger brother James Cheek, Jr. Lewis and James Jr. lived for a few years in Christian County, KY, and then Gibson County, IN. Lewis Cheek ended up in Lawrence County, IL, some time prior to 1830, where he obtained several land patents.
James Cheek, Sr., of Laurens Dist., SC, died without a will. Lewis and James Jr. are believed to be his sons because they are listed in the 1800 census of Laurens Dist., SC. However, their relationship to James Cheek, Sr., is not well documented.
The 1810 census of Hopkinsville Township, Christian County, KY, includes Lewis Cheak, James Cheak, Shadrick Cheak, Winney Cheek, and Hardin Cheak. Lewis and James are believed to be brothers; Shadrick (Shadrach) might be a brother, although this is even more speculative (because there is no record of a Shadrach Cheek in Laurens, SC); and Winney may have been the widow of Ellis Cheek who obtained land in Christian County, KY, in 1799 and 1805 (his relationship to the other Cheeks is unknown). Hardin Cheek (Chick) was probably a more distant relation, son of William Chick of Pittsylvania County, VA.
Lewis Cheek and James Cheek are both listed in the 1820 census of Gibson County, IN. After that, they went their separate ways, Lewis settling in Lawrence County, IL, and James Jr. in Franklin County, MO.
