He married (1) Caroline Cheek, daughter of Henderson CHEEK & Lucy BRYAN, Oct. 21, 1884, in Alleghany Co., NC. She was born March 29, 1864, in Alleghany Co., NC, and died Jan. 5, 1915, in Alleghany Co., NC. He married (2) Loretta Joines, daughter of James Mack JOINES & Charity J. WAGONER, abt. 1918. She was born June 13, 1901, in Alleghany Co., NC, and died June 25, 1984, in Alleghany Co., NC. Wiley and Caroline Maxwell are buried at the Liberty Baptist Church in Whitehead, Alleghany Co., NC. Loretta Joines Maxwell is buried at the Thomas Joines Cemetery, Road 1133, Alleghany Co., NC.

iley P. Maxwell, Jr., was the son of Wiley P. Maxwell,
Sr., a notable person in the history of Alleghany County. Wiley
P. Maxwell, Sr., was a captain of the Alleghany County Home Guard
during the Civil War. He was killed in October 1864 during a
fight that broke out at Killen's or Killian's Branch near
Sparta. According Dr. A.B. Cox,
Footprints in the Sands of Time
(1900), W.P. MAXWELL Sr. was
"a kind-hearted, worthy good man, respected by the
community, was cruelly murdered by Bushwhackers in time of war.
His wife was Jane EDWARDS, a good woman and faithful wife."
The other men killed at Killen's Branch were Martin CROUSE,
Felix REEVES, and Jesse REEVES. (See John Preston Arthur,
Western North Carolina: A History (1914) Ch. XXVII, p.616).
Although "bushwhackers" have long been blamed for the
killings, some researchers believe that the fighting involved
residents of the county who had reached a stage of violent
disagreement over whether support for the war should continue.
