Notes
amuel Willey (1803-1886) lived in northern Alleghany County, NC, on the Little River and Fighting Creek. He may have been a brother of Levi Willey and Andrew Willey, who also lived in Ashe/ Alleghany County during the same time period. This assumption is not proven, although Samuel did have sons named Levi and Andrew.
Samuel Willey's estate was probated in Alleghany County in 1886. (NC Archives Box No. CR.004.508.29.)
- 1850 Census, Ashe Co., NC, p.241 (HH#48):
SAML EDWARDS [WILLEY],* 39, farmer, NC - WILLY, Sarah, 23,** NC
- -- John, 14, NC
-- Levi, 11, NC
-- Calvin, 8, NC
-- Nancy, 6, NC
-- Martin, 4, NC
-- Solomon, 1, NC
*"Edwards" is probably a mistake by the census-taker: this is Samuel Willey's family. An Edwards family immediately precedes the Willey family on this census page, which probably explains the error.
**Sarah's age, 23, is probably incorrect based on the ages of her children. Either that, or Samuel had another wife before Sarah.
Sept. 5, 1858. Samuel WILLEY & Matilda HOLBROOK posted a marriage bond in Ashe Co., NC. Note, Matilda was the widow of Washington K. HOLBROOK of Surry Co., NC.
